MACC Needs to Investigate Balung Tawau Gold Mining Activities Operating Without EIA License

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) needs to take strict action against Wullersdorf Resources Sdn Bhd after it was found to be still carrying out gold mining activities in Bukit Mantiri, Balung Tawau.

A spokesperson known only as Anak Balung claimed that gold mining activities were still being carried out even though the company’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license had been terminated.

He said that until now, many locals from Kampung Balung Kokos were working at the factory but it was understood by the insurance company that there was no insurance coverage for mining activities at the Wullersdorf Resources mine.

“This is because the EIA license owner had previously cancelled it for gold mining activities in Bukit Mantiri, Balung Tawau.

“Although the Wullersdorf Resources Sdn Bhd factory has been ordered to stop, exploration activities at the mining site are still actively being carried out until now,” he told Sabah News Today today.

He claimed how the Wullersdorf Resources Sdn Bhd company dared to carry out their activities without having an EIA license.

“The recent environmental disaster has had a negative impact on the village community because toxic waste flows into the nearby river.

“The Balung River is one of the sources for the villagers to get water and fish,” he explained.

According to him, the villagers’ income has been greatly affected because they fear the risk of toxic waste from the Wullersdorf Resources factory.

“We want the MACC to act immediately because we fear there is an element of abuse of power in this issue, as a result of which the villagers are now victims.

“How the owner of the Wullersdorf Resources Sdn Bhd company dared to carry out its mining activities even though they do not have an EIA license,” he said.
